Understanding the Culture
Haggling in Dubai's souks isn't just about getting a discount—it's a social interaction, a game, and sometimes even an art form. Traders expect it and often enjoy the banter.
The Golden Rules
1. Never Accept the First Price
Initial prices are usually 40-60% higher than what sellers will accept. Start by offering 50% of the asking price.
2. Stay Friendly
Smile, be polite, and treat it like a conversation. Aggressive tactics rarely work and might offend.
3. Know When to Walk Away
If you're not getting the price you want, politely thank them and start to leave. This often brings better offers.
4. Buy Multiple Items
If you're buying several items, you have more negotiating power. Mention you're buying in bulk for a better deal.
Best Places to Practice
- Gold Souk - expect 10-15% discount on marked prices
- Spice Souk - can negotiate 30-40% off initial quotes
- Textile Souk - highest negotiation margins, up to 50%
What Not to Do
Don't haggle for small amounts (under AED 20), don't be rude, and don't compare with other shops unless you're willing to leave. Most importantly, once you agree on a price, honor it—it's considered a verbal contract.
